The water project in Kiteto

Kiteto is located in northern Tanzania, inhabited by Maasai people. It is a district where a large part of the population has no access to water. The main activities are agriculture and the breeding of cows and sheep. The most common crops are that of corn and sunflower flowers. Corn, in particular, is both sold and used as livestock feed.

Access to water

In some parts of the Kiteto district, families employ more than three hours for its collection, useful not only for hygiene reasons, but also for their agricultural activities, which require large quantities of water. For this reason, many families use unsafe sources, and only a percentage sanitizes the water (for example, by boiling it). Direct access to water therefore means less time for collection and safer hygiene conditions.

The big picture

The water is inaccessible for longer 700 million of people. Most of them live in rural and isolated areas, and they use many hours of the day to recover this resource. The lack of drinking water is a problem from a hygienic point of view, and also takes a lot of time, especially from women and children, who take care of its collection. The lack of adequate education is the first obstacle to poverty reduction: investing in drinking water has a very high economic and social return in the developing community.
